Llibres i ciment. Mides variables
The disappearance of the book as an object of knowledge transmission, far from being made effective definitively by the domination of new technologies, seems to reactivate, paradoxically, its object singularity. On the occasion of the commission to create the stage space for a dramatized reading of texts by Joan Brossa and other colleagues of her generation, I devised a series of pieces that emphasized the object value of books as sculptural volumes. By valuing the negative spaces of various open books, volumes of cement are generated which are arranged in a multiple way in the space. To the diversity and characteristics of each book are added the different angles of opening of its pages, which gives them volume and weight. The subsequent installation deployed in each stage or exhibition space follows criteria with slight landscape references.
Subsequently, I developed a sculptural work where the relationship of volumes and titles obeys criteria of conceptual and thematic proximity. In a metal shelf there are volumetric sets formed by books opened by cement wedges of various dimensions that fit the size of each of them, forming a kind of book points. The volumes are related variously forming constructions and thematic groups that generate multiple assimilations and oppositions. The first of the shelves brings together basic textbooks from various disciplines (geometry, topography, astronomy, electricity, mythology, physics, construction …), creating a kind of encyclopedic collection of practical and technical knowledge regarding representation, interpretation. and the occupation of space. The second group includes volumes that aim to offer a certain interpretation of the world from a philosophical, political or belief system point of view
