10 photographs taken in Barcelona and Rozebeke (Flandes) are the point of departure for a project that illustrates literally various sayings in the Flemish language and whose later installation in a wooded area along the Zwalm River creates a circuit mirroring tourist itineraries and green routes. An index at the beginning of the circuit lists the idiomatic expressions corresponding with each image. The visitors move freely along the route and search for the different lecterns with the iconographic representations of some expressions which are nearby.
This project proposes a critical revision of the concept of public sculpture and substitutes orthodox notions of monumentality for a rethinking of ideas concerning space, the re-apropriation of landscape, history and local knowledge. The project encourages participation as much in the production of the piece as in the relationship with the viewer/visitor. Some of the actors photographed in the scenes are members of the local community and the collaboration in the recompilation and selection of the sayings is the fruit of previous interaction and consultation.
This piece was created within the framework of the public art project: Kunst & Zwalm 2003.
